Chris Hayman, Chairman and Chief Executive of Seatrade Communications has been awarded the Passenger Shipping Association's annual John Lancaster Smith Award - a lifetime achievement award for services to passenger shipping.
The prestigious award was presented at the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) Annual Dinner, which took place on board NCL's Norwegian Gem, in the presence of more than 450 guests and representatives from the cruise and ferry industry, on Friday 5 October.
Chris Hayman received the award for his unique contribution to passenger shipping over a number of years and in particular for his role in the growth of the annual Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami since its inception in 1985. The convention, now owned by CMP but with the conference still programmed by Seatrade, is recognised as the leading meeting place for the now mature, global cruise industry, and boasted more than 10,000 attendees in 2007.
Chris has worked at Seatrade for over 30 years and is well known for his unique style and exceptional moderating skills, which have graced cruise shipping conventions and forums around the world, both Seatrade-owned and managed, and at other industry gatherings.
Thanks to his deep knowledge and understanding of the cruise business, Chris has also been instrumental in the global growth of cruising, which has seen Seatrade set up cruise events in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as Central and South America. In addition the Seatrade Cruise Academy offers one-week courses on the business of cruise and Seatrade Cruise Review and the online news service Seatrade Insider provides full coverage of the industry to a global audience.
Bill Gibbons, Director of the PSA comments: “Chris Hayman is a very worthy winner of this prestigious award thanks to the contribution he has made to the expansion of the cruise industry over a number of years. As well as bringing people together at Seatrade conferences around the world, Chris's unique style and personality have made him a popular and respected industry figure and he is an example to everyone. It is also fitting that someone who has arranged so many award events over the years should receive this very major industry award himself.”
Previous winners of the award are Lord Sterling in 2005 and Mauro Terrevazzi in 2006.
