PIRATE attacks were foiled in the Arabian Sea off the west coast of India last week when Evergreen's 3,428-TEU Ital Glamour endured a 30 minute assault, TradeWinds reported.
Evergreen's partner Italia Marittima said there were no injuries to the 22 crew though rocket propelled grenades hit cabins and the galley during the assault, reported UK-based InterManager, the portal of the International Ship Managers' Association (ISMA). No armed guards were aboard.
Italian naval bomb disposal men defused an unexploded grenade, reported American Shipper, adding that the ship deployed evasive maneuvres and directed fire hoses on the attacking pirates.
The Ital Glamour, built in 1987 was 500 nautical miles west of Karwar, India, which is 500 kilometres south of Mumbai when attacked, reported India Today.
The newspaper also reported an attack on a Cosco bulk carrier, the 26,800-ton Full City carrying phosphates, which was foiled as well. The crew locked themselves in a "citadel" saferoom when the pirates attacked about 560 miles off India's west coast.
The Indian Navy and Coast Guard responded, and when naval aircraft warned the pirates by radio to leave the ship, they complied.
