Apr 1, 2011 Shipping

THE Yangtze River Shipping Administration Bureau predicts that the river trade is enjoying rapid steady growth this year as the domestic and international markets flourish once again, Xinhua reports.

The bureau also predicts that as China's manufacturing industry are moving from coastal regions to the interior, there is going to be a lot more container cargo moving on the river, leading to rapid growth in throughput of ports along the way.

Last year marked the fastest experienced in the 11th five-year plan from 2006 to 2010. Mainstream cargo movement exceeded 1.5 billion tonnes. River ports handled 1.4 billion tonnes, up 22.3 per cent year on year. Zhenjiang throughput surpassed 100 million tonnes last year, making it the fifth port by volume after Suzhou, Nantong, Nanjing and Jiangyin.

In 2010, the river ports' foreign trade cargo throughput set new high by reaching 169 million tonnes, up 16.5 per cent.
