Exclusion zone for Maersk ships calling Japan

Mar 18, 2011 Shipping

Danish shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk told Reuters on Thursday its vessels would not enter or pass through an offshore area close to an overheating nuclear plant in Japan.

"We have defined an exclusion zone -- off shore from the Fukushima nuclear power plant -- where vessels are not to enter or transit," Maersk group press officer Michael Christian Storgaard told the newswire. "As long as it is considered safe, Maersk vessels will continue to call Japan."

He added that the exclusion zone was a minimum of 30 km. "We are monitoring the situation and it might change."

Elsewhere, ports around the region including Singapore and Shanghai have started scanning all Japanese cargoes for radiation.
