Nigeria tells shipping firms to pay CTN fees or face fines

Mar 18, 2011 Shipping

SHIPPING firms operating in Nigeria that refuse to comply with the Nigerian Port Authority's (NPA) Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) will be heavily fined.

NPA managing director Omar Suleiman said a letter was sent to shipping companies, saying: "Notice is hereby given that all shipments not covered by CTN will attract a 100 per cent penalty payable by the carrier. Please note and ensure strict compliance."

London's International Freighting Weekly said the CTN gives detailed information about imports and levies charges, ranging from US$200 to $450 per container, depending on the country of origin.

It said that according to Mr Suleiman, the NPA's enforcement notice has met with little compliance. The CTN policy was approved by Nigeria's Federal Executive Council more than a year ago.
