Sumitomo aims at six newbuildings in 2011

Mar 11, 2011 Shipping

Japan's Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering, shipbuilding subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, aims at six newbuildings especially for 100,000-dwt tankers this year. The shipbuilder received zero newbuilding order in 2009 and only two in 2010.

Due to the difficult situation caused by competition from Korean and Chinese shipbuilders, the yard plans to increase productivity by specializing in their own ship type-100,000dwt class tankers, and to improve ship capacity as clients required.

The yard will gradually increase its annual new order goal after 2012.
