FAA investigates Denver airport after runway breaches

THE US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating recent runway incursions at Denver International Airport after one aircraft taxied into an active take-off and landing runway and airport vehicles blundered into the path of aircraft.

Airport manager Kim Day has asked the FAA to help conduct "a candid, systemic evaluation of all our airfield safety and training programmes," reported the Denver Post.

On February 9, a small Key Lime Air cargo plane missed a turn onto a taxiway and instead ended up on an active runway as a Frontier Airlines jet was taking off.

On February 4, a contractor working for the airport drove into an active taxiway. An airport employee noticed and notified airport security and airport operations personnel, said airport spokesman Jeff Green.

"The individual was stripped of airport driving privileges and escorted from the airfield, as per the airport's policies and procedures," Mr Green said.

"While they are unrelated and very different, these incidents occurring literally days apart have me concerned that we must consider all approaches to improving safety at our airport," said Ms Day.
