Fuel shortages, but boxes move despite South Africa truck strike

Feb 17, 2011 Shipping

SOUTH Africa's national trucking strike has turned violent in Johannesburg where police have fired rubber bullets into crowds of stone-throwing militant strikers.

So far container shipping has not been affected and most other major South African sectors remained calm. But the strike has brought a slowdown of fuel supplies, and shortages have been reported in Mpumalanga and Kwazulu Natal in and around Durban on he Indian Ocean.

Talks between the South African Allied Transport Worker's Union (SATAWU), the largest truckers union, and the employers' Road Freight Association (RFA) are at an impasse, reports London's Containerisation International. SATAWU wants a 20 per cent pay hike with housing allowances and a reduced workweek, while only the employers offer a 7.5 per cent increase.
