NYK holds winter safety programme for ships crew

Feb 16, 2011 Shipping

THE NYK Group has completed a two-month winter safety campaign, entitled "Sail on Safety," that it runs every year as part of measures to prevent accidents that are more likely to occur during the winter months when the seas are turbulent, and to warn relevant parties of the associated risks.

A company statement said: "The NYK Group has continued to focus on safe ship operations and environmental activities by sharing with related parties throughout the year the understanding of risks to vessels."

The campaign required 345 NYK Group members, including NYK executives, to visit 207 vessels to share information with the onboard crew and onshore staff about the ship and to exchange opinions about safe ship operations.

"During the visit, crew members and ship operators discussed case studies that included how to avoid unsafe conditions that can lead to an accident," it said.

NYK said it aims to continue strengthening its activities in the promotion of ship safety by "reconfirming the basic notions of safe operations through safety campaigns."
