DP World has officially opened India’s first container transhipment hub. The Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) was opened by India’ Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday.

The terminal, which was built at a cost of $600m including supporting infrastructure, will be operated by DP World Cochin. The terminal will have a capacity of 1m teu a year increasing to 1.5m teu in line with demand.

“Container trade in India has been growing year on year by 15%, and the development of a transhipment and gateway hub within the country we believe will contribute to further growth. There is considerable potential to expand the terminal over time, and we will grow as our customers grow,” said Anil Singh, senior vice president and managing director of DP World Subcontinent.
