JAPANESE shipping company MOL has announced its on-time arrival performance results for the eight services in which the carrier solely operated containerships on the major east-west trade routes between April and December 2010.
The results show that 91 per cent of its vessels operated on the Asia-US west coast trade lane were deemed on time; 73 per cent of the ships used on its Asia-US east coast services were on time; 87 per cent of its transatlantic services were on time; and 94 per cent of its Asia-Europe services were on time.
An MOL statement explained that "when a vessel arrives in the first port of destination area for both directions, eastbound and westbound, within 24 hours of scheduled time of arrival, the voyage is regarded as on-time arrival."
"Severe winter weather in Europe and strikes in France have been affecting the (October-December) services calling in European ports compared with the previous quarter July-September," the company said.
"Whether it is in our favour or not MOL will openly share the information of on time arrival with our valued customers," said MOL liner CEO TK Konishi.
London shipping consultants, Drewry's, found that ocean carrier schedule reliability in the final quarter of 2010 shows that only 55 per cent arrived on time against 60 per cent in the previous quarter, reports reported London's Containerisation International.
A year earlier 53 per cent arrived on time. Only eight of the top 20 carriers achieved more than 55 per cent reliability in the fourth quarter, with the top three best performers remaining Maersk Line (70.2 per cent), APL (67.7 per cent) and Hyundai Merchant Marine (67.6 per cent). The latter two switched position since the third quarter.
The Asia-Europe trade lane was the worst performing east-west trade lane, with only 50 per cent of all ships monitored (460) arriving on time, compared to 66 per cent in the third quarter.
Evergreen's UAM service was the best performer with 100 per cent reliability, whereas MSC's Dragon and Tiger services were the worst with zero per cent reliability, along with the CKYH alliance's MD2 schedule, and Evergreen's CES service.
