CHILEAN carrier Compania Sudamericana de Vapores' (CSAV) container volume increase 62 per cent year on year last year to 2.89 million TEU beating its 2008 historic high by 34 per cent.
Despite robust volumes and its highest-ever monthly volume in December at 294,500 TEU, the carrier was impacted by rate erosion in the last four months of the year and experienced a rate index drop of 14 per cent. This hurt its core Latin American market as rivals depressed rates.
The carrier hit seventh ranking in the Alphaliner's top 100 operated fleets beating off APL and Cosco Container Lines who came eighth and ninth rank respectively.
