Jan 7, 2011 Shipping

Mumbai: Container throughput at major ports in India for April to December 2010 increased 11% comparing with the last same fiscal period in 2009, the Indian Ports Association(IPA) said on 5 January.

Total volume for the first three quarters of fiscal 2010-2011 was estimated at 5.59m teu, up from 5.04m teu a year earlier.  Containers handled by the country’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru, grew 7% to 3.2m teu from 3m teu.

Indian Shipping Ministry estimated the major ports are unlikely to reach the overall throughput target of 600m tons for 2010-2011 ending March 31.
