THE fleet of idle containerships has stayed much the same at 326,000 TEU in the last month amounted to 2.3 per cent of the total cellular fleet.
But an increase in demand is expected among carriers in coming weeks ahead of Chinese New Year, a traditional annual surge before the holiday shutdown of production in China.
According to Alphaliner, the carrier-controlled idle fleet takes up half the total at 52 ships for 181,000 TEU with Cosco, Zim and Hapag-Lloyd leading, but with plans for reactivation of some ships this month.
Non-operating owner (NOO) idle fleet stands at 93 ships for 145,000 of which on average units are 2,000 TEU.
The privately owned company HDS Lines, registered in Iran and predecessor of banned IRISL, has six units idle with five arrested by creditor banks in Singapore (three units), Hong Kong (one unit) and Malta (one unit), said the report. Singapore has released the vessels, according to latest reports.
