CARGO traffic on the trunk stream of Yangtze River has grown rapidly from 990 million tonnes to 1.3 billion tonnes during the period from 2006 to 2009, at an annual rate of 10.3 per cent, Xinhua reported.
According to Song Dexing, director of water transport department, China Ministry of Transportation, river cargo traffic of provinces along the river have increased from 640 million to 1.02 million during the period from 2006 to 2009, up 16.8 per cent per year on average.
In 2009, ports along the river recorded an aggregate throughput of 1.1 billion tonnes, up 19 per cent compared to 2006. 140 million tonnes were foreign trade cargo, up 14 per cent over 2006. Container throughput amounted to 6.5 million TEU, up 20 per cent over 2006.
Last year, Jiangsu province's river cargo throughput reached 1.2 billion tonnes, up 180 per cent compared to 2005, or 5.7 million TEU, up 220 per cent over 2005.
Chongqing's river cargo traffic last year was 77.7 million tonnes, twice of 2005's volume. Port throughput totalled to 86.1 million tonnes, up 160 per cent compared to 2005. Container throughput was 518,000 TEU, up 240 per cent over 2005.
