Container gas risks worker health, warns Dutch safety group

THE Dutch-based action group TGAV voiced its concerns on toxic gases posing substantial health risk to workers unaware of harmful gases and vapours created from by-products of manufacturing on goods such as the glue used in sports shoes.

"After a three-week sea journey from China, for instance Europe, the concentration of gases and vapours can reach considerable levels," said the safety lobby at a conference in Brussels with an aim to "create coherent policy to prevent work disability from shipping cargo toxic fumes".

The group's publication on How to open import containers safely - a practical guide for a risk-free operation is available at http://www.tgav.info/handbook/whatisit.aspx
