Jiangsu container makers' exports surge 500pc in 10 months

JIANGSU province's box makers exported 158,000 containers during the first 10 months of this year, a sharp increase of 500 per cent over the same period in 2009.


Value of the output shot up 320 per cent to US$560 million. But the average price of them fell 30.6 per cent to $3,543, said Xinhua.


Exports from provincial container manufacturers had been rising this year and hit a monthly record in August, up 206 per cent year on year, marking the best monthly performance - 31,000 units - since August, 2008, after which monthly output dropped to 25,000 units.


The average price stopped falling but kept low until a slight recovery in the third quarter and hit $4,019 in October, down 37.1 per cent year on year but up 0.4 per cent month on month.


Processing export containers grew 480 per cent to 143,000 units. Those exported under general form of trade surged 990 per cent to 14,000 units.


US, Hong Kong and the European Union were the main markets for these box exports. 88,000 are exported to the US, up 830 per cent, 35,000 were to Hong Kong, up 660 per cent, while 24,000 were to the EU, up 560 per cent. Export boxes to these three markets accounted for 93 per cent of the province's total.


Foreign-invested companies' product container exports grew 550 per cent to 156,000 units, taking up 99.3 per cent of the total.
