RCL back in black as third quarter profit wipes out loss

THAI intra-Asia feeder Regional Container Lines (RCL) returned to profitability with a third quarter net profit of THB356 million (US$11.9 million), wiping out last year's same-quarter loss of THB589 million. Third quarter volumes increased nine per cent year on year to 646,447 TEU and mirrored that nine per cent year-on-year increase in the first nine months of the year with a 1.9 million TEU throughput total for the year to date.

Cost cutting reduced operating expenses for the first nine months by five per cent though RCL conceded that it had a battle rising fuel costs as it began to deploy all its vessels after the global downturn receded.
