THE Singapore Maritime Institute (MI) will be established soon to support the growth of the Lion City as an international maritime centre, it has been announced.

"It will drive research and development in green shipping, maritime logistics and operations, as well as marine and offshore engineering," said Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, who also serves as deputy Prime Minister.

Singapore's Maritime Port Authority (MPA) has also committed up to S$200 million (US$152.33 million) in funding over the next 10 years, which will be supplemented by contributions from Agency for Science, Technology and Research (ASTAR) and the Economic Development Board (EDB).

"It will also attract renowned academics and researchers to Singapore, and groom the next generation of local maritime talent," said Mr Teo.

This is part of a joint effort by the MPA, ASTAR, and the EDB in partnership with local institutes of higher learning (IHL).

The Singapore Maritime Institute aims to develop strategies and programmes related to the academic, policy and research and development aspects of the maritime industry. Key focus areas of the MI include sectors such as shipping, port and maritime services, as well as offshore and marine engineering, a government statement said.
