SEVEN Somali pirates were sentenced to five years by a Kenyan court in Mombasa, following the hijack of a Spanish ship in 2009, reported the BBC.
This is the third batch of pirates to be jailed since foreign anti-piracy patrols began two years ago. Kenya has signed agreements with the European Union in relation to the prosecution of piracy suspects and currently 15 pirates are serving prison sentences in Kenya and some 100 are suspects are awaiting trial.
Kenya and the Seychelles are the only coastal countries that have agreed to take in the Somali pirates arrested by international naval forces, which have been deployed in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean over the past two years, said Agence France-Presse.
