New Delhi, May 2: The Ministry of Women and Child Development has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the ITC group and the VLCC to provide training to destitute women. A pilot project — where the ITC will impart training in hospitality and VLCC will give them training in beauty and fitness — has started in Hyderabad. Apparel firms have also offered to set up laundries to provide employment to such women, said a senior official in the ministry.

“After training, they will be hired by the same organisations. The girls can also start their own enterprises. These courses would enable them to get employment. Earlier, we used to train them in candle making and knitting which have ceased to have any value in the job market,” added the official.

According to the ministry, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are “high-supply zones” of women who are forced into prostitution and hence, these areas would be given first preference while starting the course.

“Several women — after being deserted by their husbands and with no source of income — are forced into prostitution. The idea is to provide a source of employment to them. We needed forward linkages for them where they could start earning their living. These organisations came forward to help them,” said Renuka Choudhary.
