THE 13,500-TEU Evelyn Maersk was the 100th ultra large containership to sail into the port of Rotterdam in 2010, the port authority announced.
"Rotterdam is ideally suited for these vessels with a length of around 400 metres, now on the existing Maasvlakte, and shortly also on Maasvlakte 2," said Port authority CEO Hans Smit.
"After a sharp fall in container throughput during the crisis, this market sector is recovering surprisingly quickly. In the first half of 2010, almost 18 per cent more containers were handled than in the first half of 2009," he said.
As it stands, there are 42 containerships at or above the 10,000-TEU mark with a further 145 on order, said the port authority statement.
