HYUNDAI MERCHANT MARINE's (HMM) California United Terminals (CUT) is planning to shut down its terminal operations at Pier E in the Port of Long Beach and relocate to the Port of Los Angeles.
The CUT terminal opened in 1979 and currently services calls mainly from HMM and its partners, APL and MOL. The terminal handled about 386,000 TEU last year, reports Alphaliner.
CUT's existing facility at Pier E offers 640 metres of berth and it is leased from the port authority on a short-term basis. CUT has reached an agreement with APMT to sublease one of the five berths at APMT's Pier 400 terminal in Los Angeles, located a few kilometres from CUT's present site.
The Port of Los Angeles Harbour Commission has approved APMT's request to sublease a portion of its facility to CUT and assign it expansion rights to the new Pier 500.
The report said that a chief reason behind CUT's move is the planned redevelopment of Long Beach's Middle Harbour, to combine the Long Beach Container Terminal (OOCL) and the area presently occupied by CUT into one larger facility.
CUT is expected to relocated before the end of the year. The main service presently calling at CUT is the New World Alliance's PCX that employs a fleet of five x 6,800-TEU HMM vessels. The service will follow the operator and will thus call at Los Angeles instead of Long Beach, once the move is completed, said Alphaliner.
