HONG KONG's OOCL has joined other carriers in the Port of Montreal demanding surcharges because of low water on the St Lawrence River during the current heat wave which cuts loading capacity, thus increasing costs to run ships which carry less.
From July 19, OOCL is introducing a low water surcharge of US$75 per TEU and $150 per FEU. OOCL joins Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, and CMA CGM in this and it is expected that most transatlantic carriers will do the same.
Latest weather forecasts indicate no improvement during a hot summer following a mild winter and dry spring, which brought little snow or rain.
