NATIONAL Container Company (NCC) in Russia has announced that the total throughput of its FCT and NUTEP terminals in January-May 2010 amounted to 512,792 TEU, an increase of 32.6 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier.
"These results also exceed the figures of the pre-crisis period of 2008 by 2.8 per cent which illustrates that NCC has overcome the negative effects of the downturn," the company said in a statement.
The throughput of First Container Terminal (FCT) in St Petersburg from January-May was 454,792 TEU, up 31.4 per cent year on year. In May FCT handled 102,072 TEU, up 32.9 per cent, making it the largest monthly cargo volume ever handled by FCT and "any container terminal in the countries of the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe," it said.
As for the throughput of NUTEP in Novorossiysk during the reporting period, it handled 58,000 TEU in the first five months of the year, an increase of 42.9 per cent compared to January-May 2009. In May, NUTEP handled 8,409 TEU, up 39.2 per cent compared to May last year.
The aggregated throughput of all NCC's terminals in 2009 amounted to about 1.2 million TEU. NCC's share of the Russian container handling market reached 40 per cent, it added.
