ORIENT Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has christened its newest container vessel, the OOCL Savannah, in Geoje Shipyard, South Korea, in recognition of the Port of Savannah's growing role in Asia.
"We are honoured for OOCL to name its newest vessel after our city, which is home to our nation's fastest-growing container port," said Curtis Foltz, Georgia Ports' executive director in a report by the Savannah Morning News.
The Savannah is the 15th in OOCL's line of 16 new 4,578-TEU container vessels on order from Samsung Heavy Industries.
OOCL chief operating officer Philip Chow said: "The Port of Savannah is one of the fastest-growing ports on the US east coast. Savannah is a significant distribution centre for major retailers and is set to enjoy continued growth in the coming few years as more shippers choose the all-water service following the expansion of the Panama Canal."
The OOCL Savannah will be deployed halfway around the world. The port rotation is: Osaka, Kobe, Tokyo, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Laem Chabang, Shenzhen-Shekou, Hong Kong, Xiamen, and back to Osaka in a 21-day round trip.
