THE London-based St Kitts & Nevis International Ship Registry (SKANReg) has flagged its 1,000th vessel since starting operations in February 2005, it has been announced.
Latest plans include further recruitment of Flag State Inspectors (FSI's) - a key measure behind the registry's ongoing improvement in Port State Control MOU performance - with added focus on sector-specific skills, said a statement from the registry.
SKANReg reached the 1,000 registrations in mid-May when its maritime registrar in India - one of 42 around the world - signed the Ocean Pearl, a 12,000-ton general cargo vessel operating out of Panama and owned by holding company Merchant House.
A further 11 ships have been added since then, taking the current register to 610 vessels with an average size of 3,000 tons.
General cargo ships represent 28 per cent of the register, workboats and barges 18 per cent, tankers 16 per cent, pleasure vessels 10 per cent, bulk carriers five per cent and ro-ro ships four per cent. The balance of 19 per cent includes offshore support vessels, fishing boats and 80 yachts.
