Carnival Australia, the nation’s biggest cruising company has said a modern and purpose-built cruise shipping facility was the key to the long-term success of the vibrant East Darling Harbour/Barrangaroo development.

CEO, Ann Sherry, called on the NSW Government today to ensure a world-class cruising facility was included in the redevelopment of the precinct.

Carnival Australia is part of Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest cruise holiday company, and represents P&O Cruises Australia, Princess Cruises, Cunard, Seabourn, Costa and P&O Cruises World Voyages.

“Cruising is the fastest growing segment of the travel industry with more than 200,000 cruise passengers, local and international, already visiting Sydney each year,” Ms Sherry said.

“Every time one of our ships turns around at Darling Harbour, they bring about 4000 people through the area, creating the activity, energy and commerce that is so important to bringing inner-city precincts to life.

“Building a world-class cruising facility at Barrangaroo that attracts thousands of people will be fundamental to ensuring the precinct is set up for success.

“I urge the designers and, ultimately, the NSW Government to take advantage of this opportunity.”

On the most conservative estimates, cruising already contributes $184 million to the NSW economy.

Ms Sherry said the industry, which was growing at double-digit figures, would continue to be an economic powerhouse for NSW if it ensured that a great time was had by passengers in Sydney.

“We know passengers love sailing into Sydney’s CBD and it is often a highlight of their cruise.  A cruise facility at Barrangaroo will continue to profile Sydney as a great place to visit, stimulate business in the area, and support the local economy.”
