May 28, 2010 Shipping

CHINA Merchants Holdings (International) Co has announced that cargo volume in 2010 may top 2008's record.

Shipments at China Merchants' mainland terminals increased by 22 per cent between January and April, according to deputy managing director Hu Jianhua.

"We still haven't returned to 2008 levels," Liu Yunshu, deputy managing director said. "We hope we can surpass it this year."

China Merchants is continuing to forecast that container volume will grow between 10 and 15 per cent in 2010 amid a recovery in world trade, Bloomberg reported. An increase of 15 per cent in volume would surpass the 50.6 million TEU shipped by the company in 2008, said deputy general manager Cynthia Wong.
