9th century Jewel of the Muscat to set sail to Malaysia, Singapore

May 17, 2010 Shipping

OMAN's 9th century ship, the Jewel of Muscat, will soon set sail for Malaysia from Sri Lanka before embarking on the final leg of its journey to Singapore.

This historic ship is expected to arrive at Penang on June 5 and Selangor on June 21. The project is the result of collaboration between the governments of Oman and Singapore and is expected to strengthen diplomatic ties while reliving history of the 9th century ship. It is also intended to promote the cultures of Oman and Singapore while learning about cultures at the same time.

"This is a once in a lifetime voyage for everyone on board the ship and those participating countries. It is a chance not to be missed for everyone to see for the first time a 9th century ship and its journey to the Far East, which clearly depicts how the Arabian first began trading with the Asian," said Dr Chan Jee Kei, managing director for Opal Asia Shipping Sdn Bhd.

Appointed as the agents in Malaysia, Opal Asia Shipping and Archipelago Asia Shipping Sdn Bhd will be responsible for coordinating the arrival of the Jewel of Muscat in Malaysia.

Dr Chan said he was delighted being the one appointed for the welcoming of the Jewel of Muscat and its crew to Malaysia.

Both Opal Asia and Archipelago Asia are seeking sponsorship from any interested organisation, to ensure the success of this project in Malaysia. "Sponsors will be given a grand acknowledgment during the ceremony and this is a once in a lifetime event which will be documented by the National Geographic Channel," said Dr Chan.
