NIGERIAN officials, operators and proponents of the Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) system, were reportedly shocked to discover that a "toxic" container filled of electronic garbage and old batteries, came into port with the security system's blessing, reported Lagos Vanguard.
The much-touted CTN system was supposed to provide authorities with advanced notice on cargo for security reasons with all cargo manifests and bills of lading bearing the CTN clearance number.
The discovery that the clearance number had been given the "toxic" box created fresh doubts among those who had defended the introduction of the CTN system in January, said the newspaper, adding that fraud was now suspected with the collusion of officials.
Although, the "toxic" container was sent back, its discovery has undermined faith in the arguments of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and its consultants, Messrs TPMS Antaser.
Stakeholders now want Transport Minister Alhaji Suleiman Yusuf to re-assess CTN that had assigned the "toxic" box with clearance number and a Safmarine bill of lading issued in the Netherlands.
