THE eight ASEAN Ports and Shipping is to be held from June 3-4 at the Windsor Plaza Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The Transport Ministry will sponsor the event.
The conference is one part of the government's long-term goal to reform the maritime sector beyond 2010 and to "develop the shipping sector as a leading industry of the sea-based economy, further international economic integration and ensure sustainable growth," a statement from the organisers said.
The event follows the revision of the Vietnam Maritime Code that encourages "all Vietnamese and foreign organisations and companies to invest in developing Vietnam's shipping industry, port facilities, maintenance and management."
The Vietnamese maritime sector plans to build additional deep-water ports in the north, centre and south, as well as the Van Phong International Seaport, after upgrading and expanding 10 key ports. In light of this organisers have arranged a site visit to Saigon Port and other container terminal operations.
The exhibition is intended to provide companies with a platform to showcase products and services in a bid to raise brand awareness, launch new products, networks and establish business contacts. Around 100 international companies have agreed to participate in the two-day exhibition. The conference will feature 35 speakers, and attendees are expected to number 600 senior executives from 25 countries.
