Drydocks World gets back to work in Indonesia

Apr 28, 2010 Shipping

Singapore: Pertama and Nanindah, two of Drydocks World’s three shipyards on Batam Island, Indonesia, re-opened for business on Monday after last week’s huge riot sparked by racist comments at the company’s third yard on the island, Graha.

Drydocks World - Southeast Asia reported that more than 70% of shipyard staff were now at work and the company is expecting that Graha will resume operations this week. The company did not disclose what damages had taken place at Graha, though images from the riots last week showed fires and extreme violence.

As many as 5,000 workers were protesting against an alleged racial slur by an Indian manager last Thursday. Several people were injured and Indonesian police say they had to evacuate dozens of Indian employees.  The manager had repeatedly called the workers "stupid", local media say.
