Three more claims that were before the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC), related to occupational disease involving employees of the shipyard in Marystown, were approved last week.
Bernadine Bennett, co-chair of the Marystown Shipyard Family Alliance, indicated that brings the total to six cases so far of the 39 claims submitted by her group to the WHSCC last March.
Two of the six claims are co-represented by the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union, which represents workers at the shipyard.
Mrs. Bennett pointed out letters of acceptance were received by claimants Tuesday – not compensation, which still has to be decided. While the news is another step in the right direction, she acknowledged there’s still a long ways to go.
