Yantian barge feeder service cuts shipping costs

Sep 29, 2009 Shipping

Shenzhen's Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT) has started a direct feeder service to Nine Dragons Paper Holdings' (NDPH) factory in Dongguan in the Pearl River Delta in south China.

Import containers are now sent from the terminal to the factory directly by barge, which is a more cost-effective mode of transport.

YICT has allotted a container storage area within the terminal for the feeder service and made arrangements with China Customs and the Quarantine Bureau to enable on-site cargo inspection and disinfection.

To complement the new service, YICT has opened an inland container depot in Shunde in Foshan City to store containers unloaded by the company.

After the containers are returned to the depot, cargo owners in Shunde can load and ship them to YICT for export.

This reduces empty containers' turnaround time and cuts storage costs for shipping lines and barge operators.

"The feeder service is a new breakthrough in logistics services in south China," said NDPH export manager Mao Jiayin.
