CMA CGM sends out SOS to banks, French government

Sep 28, 2009 Shipping

AUTHORITIES in central China have banned vessels carrying dangerous cargo from passing through the Three Gorges for 10 days starting today, September 28.

The state news agency Xinhua said the measure is to prevent mishaps during the National Day celebration period, starting October 1.

The Three Gorges dam, which was largely completed in 2008, spans the Yangtze River in Hubei province.

The river navigation administration said the ban was aimed at curbing pollution and terrorist acts during the 10-day period.

The administration said it would make strict safety checks and ban vessels carrying "top-class dangerous goods", but did not say which goods fall under this category.
