Port of Long Beach consults citizens on-dock rail expansion

THE Port of Long Beach has opened public hearings on a proposal to increase the use of "on-dock" trains and reduce trucking at the port.

The first hearing on the proposed "on-dock rail support facility" was held on September 2 and the second is scheduled for September 16.

The project entails redeveloping and expanding an existing rail support facility on the northern side of the port, reported American Shipper.

The expanded track would connect to the Alameda Corridor, a 20-mile freight line connecting the Southern California ports to rail yards near central Los Angeles.

The port has released a "notice of preparation" on the proposal, the first step in a state environmental review process to get the project approved.

Loading and unloading cargo within the port significantly reduces trips by short-haul trucks throughout the region, a port official said.
