Sep 10, 2009 Shipping

DEPLOYED capacity on the Asia-Europe, transpacific and transatlantic trades has fallen by 15.5 per cent from 900,869 TEU in September 2008 to 761,261 TEU at the beginning of this month, according to Paris-based Alphaliner.

The biggest change came in the Asia-Europe trade, where deployed capacity fell by 22 per cent year on year, resulting in a reduction of 87,000 TEU per week.

Capacity on the transpacific trade dropped by 10.7 per cent for the year, while transatlantic capacity fell by 10.1 per cent.

The Alphaliner report states that the declines in capacity mirrored the declines in volumes handled at the world's top 20 ports during the first six months of the year.
