The Canadian Government said in late July that it would commit to building and maintaining an effective federal fleet of vessels for maritime safety and services.

Under its new fleet renewal project, the Canadian Government said that it would build over 50 new large vessels over the next 30 years. The building of the vessels is expected to create jobs for 1,200 to 1,500 workers for 30 years.
Apart from these vessels, the government also said that it had earmarked 70 vessels, each displacing less than 1,000 tonnes, for renewals. In addition, any new vessel added to the Canadian fleet would generate demand for refit and repairs.
The last time the Canadian Government announced a substantial fleet renewal programme was in the mid 1990s.
