CMA CGM 'confirms' peak season surcharge from August 1

Jul 22, 2009 Shipping

MARSEILLES' CMA CGM, the world's third largest container shipping line, said it was "confirming" its earlier intention to levy a peak season surcharge of US$150 per TEU on the Asia-Europe trade from August 1.

This comes on top of a $300 per TEU increase in the freight rate imposed June 1, which was levied with a warning of a peak season surcharge could be expected to come later in the year.

Rising oil prices then prompted CMA CGM to impose a July 1 emergency bunker surcharge of $333 per TEU from $281 on top of the freight rate increase.

The French carrier said it is imposing the peak season surcharge "in view of the strong market conditions prevailing on the Asia-Europe trade" and would keep it in force for as long as market conditions justify it.
