GERMANY’S Wintershall has had a significant oil and gas strike on the Norwegian continental shelf, IHS Global Insight reported today.
The well is the first one drilled in the Grosbeak prospect in Norway’s North Sea, “so the hole-in-one is a positive and promising result”, added the report.
Norway’s large Troll field lies just 25km to the south, so connections to existing infrastructure are a possibility, opening up further opportunities. The well will now be plugged, and the drilling rig will be moved to a new location in the Norwegian Sea, Global Insight said.
Wintershall operates the rig with a 40% share. Partners include Spring Energy, Premier Oil and Norwegian Energy Company, each with a 20% stake.
Wintershall has boosted its presence in Norway’s waters in recent years, Global Insight pointed out, notably with the purchase in 2008 of Norwegian exploration company Revus Energy.
