Rousse Shipyards sack worker

Jul 7, 2009 Shipping

Rousse Shipyards (Bulgaria) has offloaded workers who went on strike earlier this week on acount of payment delays, The Sofia Echo informed. The exact number of people sacked from duty, out of the 600 who refused to go to work on Monday, is as of yet undisclosed, although reports claim that as of June 3 at least four people were told they were surplus to requirements.
On June 1, some sense of normality was restored at the shipyards when workers returned to their work stations, following the announcement that the company management had wired half their wages due for April. Furthermore, the management board has also proposed to unions during negotiations conducted on June 30, that 50 per cent of the remaining debts be paid in bimonthly installments until the balance is met in full, which was subsequently confirmed by union leader Hristo Yordanov.
The worked who were sacked, according to Dnevnik, were not foreigners (the firm employs a number of Vietnamese workers), nor were they employees approaching retirement. Those released were 'ring leaders', people who actively participated and/or organised the strike, earlier this week, and their actions were "meticulously recorded on CCTV", Dnevnik daily said.
Executive manager of Rousse Shipyards, Ignat Traikov, was unavailable for comment.
