Singapore warns North Korea

SINGAPORE would not hesitate to board and search a North Korean ship suspected of carrying weapons in its waters, a foreign ministry representative said today.

Singapore takes seriously the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, their means of delivery and related materials,” she told Fairplay.

“If the allegation is true, Singapore will act appropriately,” she added but would not confirm whether the ship was scheduled to call at the port, saying only that no further information was available.

News agencies reported that the US destroyer John McCain is tracking the 2,080dwt Kang Nam 1, which is said to be headed to Myanmar (Burma) via Singapore from Nampo in North Korea.

A new UN resolution bars North Korea from exporting arms, including missile parts and nuclear materials. Tension in the Korean peninsula has increased after missile tests by the North, which has made no secret of its nuclear ambitions.
