Chinese ports post 10pc March gains after months of decline

PORTS in China recorded growth in March after several months of fall in throughput, Logistics Week reported.

Shanghai International Port Group handled 2.18 million TEU in this month, down nearly 10 per cent over the same period last year, but much higher than February's 1.53 million TEU. The port's throughput fall in January and February were all above 15 per cent.

Eastern China's Port of Ningbo's cargo tonnage fell 2.96 per cent year on year to 30.2 million tonnes that month, but increased 31.4 per cent over February's 24 million tonnes. Container throughput dropped slightly year on year by 3.04 per cent to 830,000 TEU but surged 37.8 per cent over February's 602,200 TEU.

Tianjin Port lifted 730,000 TEU in March, up 5.5 per cent year on year. Cargo tonnage rose 4.3 per cent to 31.9 million tonnes.

Port of Qingdao's container throughput in the first quarter cumulated to 2.5 million TEU, up 2.3 per cent year on year. Overall cargo tonnage went 4.5 per cent up to 78.5 million tonnes.

Guangzhou recorded a box volume of 1.7 million TEU and an overall cargo tonnage of 51.8 million during the first quarter. Both container throughput and cargo tonnage in March registered increases over January and February.

Southeastern China's Fuzhou Port lifted 97,000 TEU in March with a narrower decrease of 1.31 per cent comparing to January and February. Cargo tonnage jumped 33.9 per cent to 7.6 million tonnes.

Eastern China's Port of Lianyungang port handled 27.9 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter, up 9.9 per cent year on year. Its March throughput climbed 14.8 per cent to 9.79 million tonnes.
