Port responds to Middle Harbor appeal

The City of Riverside filed an appeal with the Long Beach City Council yesterday, Thursday, April 23, challenging the adequacy of an environmental impact report certified April 13 by the Board of Harbor Commissioners for the Port of Long Beach’s $750 million Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project.
In response, Harbor Commission President James C. Hankla issued the following statement: “We believe that with our exhaustive EIR, review by experts, diligent community outreach and multiple public meetings we have more than met the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act. This project is critical to the competitiveness of the Port, supporting badly needed jobs and greatly improving the environment."
The Middle Harbor project will modernize two outdated shipping terminals to improve efficiency, increase cargo capacity, support 14,000 new jobs and slash existing air pollution levels by 50 percent.
The public has until April 27 to appeal the harbor commission certification of the EIR.  A hearing must be scheduled within 60 days after the filing of the appeal.
