Even as shipping trade has dwindled following the global economic slowdown, the Major Ports’ capacity has increased to 555.67 million tonnes in 2008-09.
According to a Shipping Ministry official, the Major Ports will see a quantum jump in capacity once the projects planned under public-private partnership (PPP) model are implemented.
He said the government had added a total of 25 million tonnes to the existing capacities of the 12 Major Ports during 2008-09.
The overall capacity of Major Ports was recorded at 532 million tonnes as on March 31, 2008, Exim News Service reported.
