Rebuilt terminals ready for operations

Apr 2, 2009 Port

The Karachi Port Trust in Pakistan will reopen its deepwater container terminals in April, the Federal Minister for Port and Shipping, Mr Babur Ghauri, said.
The berths, 10 to 14 at East wharf, had to be rebuilt after they collapsed during the heavy rains in 2007.
Mr Ghauri said that his Ministry was working on reducing the port charges.
He revealed that after completion of the work, the port would move into the second phase of its development programme during which additional berths, 15 to 17, would be constructed.
These berths have also been dredged to 16 metres, as against the previous 12.5 metres to accommodate bigger boxships, Exim News Service informed.
