Harwich International Port gets ‘Wings’

Harwich International Port welcomed the arrival of some unusual cargo to its Number 5 Berth this week. Turbine parts, destined for the Gunfleet Sands Windfarm, were delivered to the port whilst they await collection by the installation vessel, the Titan 2.
Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer for Hutchison Ports, which owns Harwich International Port, commented:

Sustainable energy sources are of paramount importance, and this development will help with the country’s energy requirements, securing a ‘greener’ future for all.”
Barges containing parts for six complete turbines are set to be regular callers over the next few months, whilst the windfarm is erected. All of the parts for one complete turbine will be removed by the Titan 2 on each of its visits, to be installed at Gunfleet Sands. This process will be repeated until 48 turbines, some eight barges full, have been installed.
The developer for the Gunfleet Sands site is Dong Energy, who will be employing 48 x Siemens 3.6 MW turbines, totalling some 172.0 MW of power.
