ICTSI Syrian terminal to handle transhipment boxes

Feb 18, 2009 Port

THE Syrian Government has recently granted Tartous International Container Terminal (TICT) the authority to handle transhipment cargo, making the terminal the first in the Middle Eastern nation to handle such containers.

At present TICT moves containers at 18 moves per hour per crane using two mobile harbour cranes, but productivity is expected to increase to 25 moves per hour when two more quay cranes are added by June, said the company statement.

TICT is now working to turn this transit trade into more efficient and cost-effective action, said TICT chief executive Romeo Salvador. The establishment of dry ports at the border of Syria and Iraq should add support to this trade.

From day one, we have rolled out an investment programme to upgrade facilities, equipment and manpower skills. All these are in place, and we have excess capacity to handle transhipment.

Mr Salvador says that TICT, 260 kilometres from Damascus, continues to fine tune operations while pouring in additional investments:

TICT is a subsidiary of Manila-based International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI), a developer of international ports and terminals with a global port network spanning 11 countries in four continents.
