Suzhou throughput ranks first among China river ports

Suzhou port's 2008 throughput increased 12.8 per cent to 207 million tons, retaining its position as the biggest river port by cargo volume in China, reports Xinhua.

Suzhou, on the lower reaches of the Yangtze, near Shanghai, handled 127 million tons of cargo, up 5.7 per cent against 2007's figures. While nearby Taicang port's volume rose 31.6 per cent to 40.03 million tons and upstream Changshu port, registered a 21.3 per cent to 40.12 million tons of cargo.

Suzhou ports handled about 2.57 million TEU in 2008, up 35.6 per cent. Taicang port handled 1.45 million TEU with a 42.4 per cent growth, while Zhangjiagang port moved 814,000 TEU with a 32.3 per cent hike and Changshu port recorded a 16.9 per cent growth to 305,000 TEU.
